Fact-Up Friday: TimBL - Bournemouth Bloke Who Invented The Web

Did you know that the World Wide Web was in fact invented by an Englishman?  Not only that, but he used to call the South Coast home?

OK, the title is a little white lie - he wasn't from Bournemouth, but the inventor of Web sites lived in Colehill, Wimborne, for a time and worked for Plessey in Poole, J D Nash in Ferndown, and for over 3 years he worked at John Poole's Image Computer Systems, Ltd, in sunny sunny Bournemouth!  In fact, he is a patron of the East Dorset Heritage trust to this day.

I was lucky enough to attend a lecture by Tim Berners-Lee in 1997 back when the Web was in it's infancy.  I should point out here that he didn't invent the internet - the internet and the World Wide Web are two very different things.  The World Wide Web (WWW from now on to save my fingers) runs ON/OVER the internet.  Back in the prehistoric age of the 1990's the two were pretty much synonymous - there was virtually nothing on the internet except WWW and email servers, with the odd streaming media server thrown in here and there.

Instead of respewing what can be found elsewhere, I'll just direct you over to Wikipedia where you can find out about TimBL and how his work at CERN ended up exploding into something that is now used by almost everybody every day.

The picture, by the way, is a picture of the world's very first Web Server!
